CAREER PLANNING
Conducting an effective
job search is a process. The extent to which you are deliberate
and thoughtful in executing your search will directly affect the
success of the process. In the same way, the extent to which you
are deliberate and thoughtful in planning your career will determine
how fulfilled and satisfied you feel with your choices.
It is very important,
especially in todays marketplace, that we all understand that
we control our career. The choices we make along the way are our
responsibility. Occasionally, there are situations that we cannot
control. What we do in these situations is what determines
our future.
Few of us are ever taught how
to conduct an effective job search. Understanding the process and making
helpful suggestions are two of the ways The Schultz Group
differentiates itself. The following are some other recommendations
for a professional career search process.
Doing a career assessment
is a critical step that job seekers often neglect as they begin to look
for growth or change. It is very important that you take an inventory
of your knowledge, skills, and values.
- What industries do you
know?
- What are the critical
skills you possess?
- Where would you rank yourself
in those skill areas?
- What is important to you
about the environment in which you work?
- What kind of people do
you prefer to be working with?
- Of all the tasks you execute,
what energizes you the most?
- What have you accomplished
in your past career experience? (Try to define this in terms of how
it affected the companys bottom line.)
As you answer these questions,
you create an image of the job you are looking for. You should
prioritize what elements are most important to you as you create the
image. If you do not have a picture of where you want to go, it
will be more difficult to get there!
